Zliv Moldavite Locality

Zliv is a South Bohemian moldavite occurrence in the wider České Budějovice Basin region. Its contribution to a locality collection is best understood through documented sedimentary history rather than a claimed exclusive shape.

Regional Position

Its position near basin sediments places Zliv within a landscape repeatedly modified by watercourses, erosion and younger deposition. Surviving moldavite-bearing layers can therefore be patchy.

Geological Sequence

During the Ries impact about 14.8 million years ago, natural glass was dispersed into the Central European strewn field. Later processes moved or preserved the material found around Zliv.

Subsequent abrasion can round margins, while chemical weathering may etch exposed glass. Both processes need to be considered when reading a surface.

Specimen Character

Recovered pieces may be compact, flattened, irregular or fragmentary, with varying degrees of wear. No outline should be treated as an automatic Zliv marker.

Compared photographs are most informative when they show the entire exterior, edges and any old or recent breaks. Strong lighting effects should not substitute for condition detail.

Color and Transmission

Color may range through olive and darker green, depending on thickness and glass composition. Transmitted-light views can supplement, but not replace, a neutral front view.

Documentation

Photographs, measurements, weight and known find history should remain inseparable from the locality label. If provenance extends only to the wider Zliv area, the wording should say exactly that.

Research Value

For a regional comparison, Zliv helps illustrate how basin-related redeposition influences moldavite form and preservation. Secure context is more valuable than an unsupported visual diagnosis.

Field Conduct

Fieldwork belongs only on legally accessible ground with the owner’s consent. Careful recovery and restrained publication of sensitive details protect the locality.
