Chlum Moldavite Locality
Chlum is a classic South Bohemian moldavite locality represented by a broad range of forms rather than one narrowly defined visual type. Its strongest educational value lies in showing how deposition and later alteration can produce substantial variation within a single locality.
Locality and Setting
Set in the moldavite-bearing belt of southern Bohemia, the Chlum area is associated with sandy and gravelly sediments. Quarry and field discoveries have made the name familiar in both scientific collections and the collector market.
Geological Record
Moldavite itself originated during the Ries impact about 14.8 million years ago; Chlum is a place of later preservation, not the impact site. Sedimentary movement could abrade, redeposit or bury individual glass bodies before they were recovered.
After deposition, interaction with water and the surrounding matrix continued to modify exposed surfaces. Consequently, sculpturing should be read as part of a specimen’s post-impact history rather than described as a simple aerodynamic imprint.
Specimen Character
Known examples include flattened pieces, drops, irregular bodies and natural fragments. Relief may be gently developed or strongly three-dimensional, and the transition between pits, grooves and ridges should appear geologically continuous on an unaltered surface.
Surface quality is only one criterion. Shape, completeness, old versus recent damage and the coherence of the recorded provenance all contribute to a sound assessment.
Color and Optical Features
Viewed in reflected light, thicker Chlum specimens may appear bottle green or nearly opaque; backlighting can reveal olive-green transmission, bubbles or internal flow structures. Such features occur in moldavite generally and must not be used alone to assign a locality.
Documentation
A useful Chlum record joins the exact photographs with weight, measurements, condition and the most specific defensible locality description. If the find history is incomplete, the listing should say so plainly instead of implying certainty.
Why Chlum Matters
Because its material spans several shapes and preservation states, Chlum is a practical reference for comparing sedimentary histories within South Bohemia. That diversity is scientifically more informative than promoting a single “ideal” form.

Any field activity must respect ownership, access restrictions and Czech environmental rules. Geological context is preserved best when recovery information stays attached to the specimen.
