Radomilice Moldavite Locality

Radomilice represents a distinct South Bohemian occurrence known in the geological literature for pale-green moldavites and evidence of repeated sedimentary transport. Those characteristics describe a regional tendency, not a guarantee for every specimen.

Location and Regional Identity

Near Vodňany, the Radomilice area has been treated separately from other South Bohemian occurrences because of its material’s chemistry and characteristic pale color. Clear provenance is therefore useful for both visual and analytical comparison.

Sedimentary Record

Published geological work places moldavites here in more than one sedimentary setting, including rusty sandy gravels and younger deposits. The glass ultimately derives from the Ries impact, dated to about 14.8 million years ago.

Repeated transport can produce oval outlines, worn sculpture and matte surfaces. These features explain the calmer, pebble-like appearance of some pieces without making that appearance universal.

Typical but Not Diagnostic

Paler water-green tones and rounded forms are widely associated with Radomilice. Individual specimens may still differ in color, completeness, relief and transparency.

Rounded margins should show coherent old wear; bright chips or sharply contrasting scars need separate disclosure. Smoothness is not evidence of polishing unless the surface itself supports that conclusion.

Color and Photography

Backlit images can show translucency that disappears in reflected light, particularly in thicker stones. Neutral white balance is essential when pale color is part of the locality discussion.

Why Provenance Matters

Since transported moldavites from several regions can look similar, a Radomilice attribution should rely on recovery history and continuous documentation. Shape or color alone is insufficient.

Scientific Significance

The locality demonstrates how redeposition changes both form and surface after impact glass has entered the sedimentary record. It is a useful counterpoint to sharply sculptured South Bohemian material.

Field Care

Agricultural land and private property must be entered only with permission. Responsible practice protects the site and preserves reliable context for future finds.
