Mohelno Moldavite Locality

Mohelno is a western Moravian moldavite locality associated with the Třebíč region and the Jihlava valley landscape. Its material belongs in the discussion of how old drainage and redeposition shaped Moravian finds.

Regional Setting

Located near a deeply developed river valley, the wider area contains surfaces and sediment remnants of different ages. A moldavite’s find position therefore needs to be recorded rather than inferred from the village name alone.

Geological Context

Published regional syntheses connect Moravian moldavites to the Ries event about 14.8 million years ago and describe their preservation in later sediments. Mohelno is one locality within that broader history.

Fluvial or slope transport can produce rounded bodies and worn relief; weathering after burial may add pitting or matte zones. The two processes can overlap on one specimen.

Morphology and Surface

Documented stones may be compact, oval, flattened or irregular, including natural fragments. Robust appearance is common in Moravian collections but cannot by itself demonstrate Mohelno provenance.

Surface descriptions should specify grooves, pits, gloss, patina and damage without assuming that all features formed at the same time. Recent scars need separate mention.

Color and Light

Warm olive, brown-green and occasionally honeyed transmission may be seen in regional material. Lighting and thickness must be controlled before assigning a color term.

Evidence of Origin

A reliable record connects the precise locality wording with exact images, dimensions, weight and known ownership history. Visual resemblance to another Mohelno stone is not sufficient evidence.

Scientific and Collector Context

For study, well-provenanced Mohelno specimens help map the varied depositional history of western Moravia. For collectors, transparent condition and provenance should outweigh broad rarity claims.

Landscape Respect

The Mohelno region includes environmentally sensitive land as well as private property. Collecting is acceptable only where explicit access and current law permit it.
