Skryje Moldavite Locality

Skryje is a less commonly represented Moravian moldavite locality. Rarity of the name in the market makes a clear chain of provenance more important, not less.

Regional Context

This occurrence belongs to the western Moravian part of the Central European strewn field. The surrounding region contains small and discontinuous sediment remnants rather than one uniform moldavite layer.

Geological History

Broad regional evidence links Moravian moldavite to the Ries impact around 14.8 million years ago. The glass recovered at Skryje survived later transport, burial and exposure.

Weathering can produce matte areas, shallow pits and softened relief, while abrasion changes edges and overall form. Their relative importance cannot be decided from the locality name alone.

Specimen Description

Known material may include rounded or compact bodies, flattened shapes and fragments, but the range should be documented from actual stones. Promotional shape names add little without measurements and photographs.

Visual inspection should follow the whole surface and identify any interruption in patina. Recent chips tend to contrast with older, consistently altered areas.

Color

Color may fall within the olive to brown-green spectrum common in Moravia. Thickness and lighting strongly affect apparent darkness, so comparison requires standardized images.

Attribution

Since surface appearance overlaps with other western Moravian sites, a Skryje label must rest on find history or an unbroken ownership record. Uncertainty should be visible in the description.

Collector Relevance

Collectors seeking geographic breadth may value Skryje precisely because it is less often represented. That interest does not justify stronger claims than the documentation supports.
