Brusná Moldavite Locality

Brusná is a South Bohemian moldavite locality represented by varied natural forms and preservation states. Its identity should be communicated through documented provenance, not a checklist of supposedly exclusive visual traits.

Regional Context

In the South Bohemian part of the Central European strewn field, moldavites are commonly preserved in sedimentary bodies rather than impact rock. Brusná belongs within that wider distribution.

From Impact Glass to Field Find

Moldavite reached this region after the Ries impact approximately 14.8 million years ago. The glass was subsequently exposed to erosion, transport, burial and renewed weathering.

Later contact with sediment and groundwater could alter lustre and develop pits or grooves. Such post-depositional changes must be separated conceptually from the initial flight shape.

Shapes and Surfaces

Collector records describe triangular, elongated, flattened and fragmentary Brusná pieces, but individual stones do not need to fit one preferred outline. Measurements and photographs are more useful than a forced category.

Triangles and rod-like forms may attract attention, yet neither form proves the locality. Authentic relief should continue naturally across the specimen, allowing for clearly identified old or recent breaks.

Color

Light olive through deeper green tones are possible within the broader South Bohemian spectrum. Transparency should be assessed under controlled illumination and described for the exact piece.

Provenance Standard

Locality documentation should preserve who found or previously held the specimen, the recorded find area, dimensions, weight and condition. Uncertainty belongs in the record rather than being concealed by confident sales language.

Comparative Importance

A carefully labeled Brusná stone can support comparisons of morphology and surface alteration across southern Bohemia. Without that label history, an attractive specimen loses much of its locality-specific information.

Field Ethics

Field access must be lawful and agreed with the owner. Agricultural soils, environmental protections and active extraction sites require particular care.
