Slavice–Achtele Moldavite Locality

Achtele is used here as a narrower collecting designation associated with Slavice near Třebíč. The combined title preserves that relationship and prevents Achtele from being described elsewhere as an unrelated locality.

Locality Identity

Slavice belongs to the northern part of the Moravian moldavite area. Geological reviews discuss the district as an important setting for relatively short-transported material in locally preserved sediments.

Depositional Setting

Unlike more strongly reworked river-terrace finds, some material from the Slavice–Třebíč sector retains angular or fragmentary character. That tendency should be applied cautiously to Achtele specimens and supported by provenance.

The glass originated during the Ries impact roughly 14.8 million years ago; burial and later exposure then affected the surfaces. Local sediment history, not a second impact event, explains the present occurrence.

Form and Surface

Fragmentary, compact and irregular bodies are plausible within a short-transported assemblage. Individual stones may still show rounded areas or mixed preservation.

Sharper edges should be checked for continuous weathering because a fresh fracture can imitate primary angularity. Pits, grooves and glossy zones need description without overstating their diagnostic value.

Color

Olive, brown-green and darker Moravian tones may occur, with transmitted color dependent on thickness. Photographs should separate actual glass hue from soil staining or reflected surroundings.

Provenance

For an Achtele attribution, the narrower collecting record should remain linked to exact specimen photographs, weight, dimensions and condition. If only Slavice is certain, that broader name is the honest choice.

Research Value

Carefully labeled material can contribute to comparisons between shorter-transported northern Moravian deposits and more strongly reworked southern occurrences. The value disappears when locality levels are conflated.

Landowner consent and Czech legal restrictions apply to all field activity. Precise site knowledge should support stewardship, not unauthorized excavation.
