Dukovany Moldavite Locality

Dukovany is a western Moravian moldavite locality in the Třebíč District, within the wider Jihlava River region. The locality record is significant because Moravian occurrences are less abundant and often reflect complex redeposition.

Regional Position

Around Dukovany, elevated surfaces, slopes and river-valley deposits preserve evidence of long landscape development. Moldavite finds belong to that later sedimentary history rather than to local bedrock formation.

Origin and Redeposition

Western Moravian moldavite ultimately derives from the Ries impact, which occurred about 14.8 million years ago. Erosion and changing drainage could subsequently transfer the glass through more than one deposit.

Sedimentary travel may round margins or reduce older relief, while soil chemistry and groundwater continue to alter the exterior. A stone’s present condition is therefore the sum of several stages.

Documented Dukovany pieces may be compact, oval, irregular or fragmentary. These categories describe individual morphology and should not be treated as exclusive diagnostic forms.

Compact Moravian bodies often appear darker in reflected light because of their thickness. Surface wear, pits and shallow grooves should be photographed from multiple angles.

Color and Transparency

Backlighting can reveal olive, brown-green or warmer green transmission. Color accuracy depends on neutral illumination and a description that distinguishes true glass tone from surface staining.

A defensible Dukovany record includes the exact stone, find or ownership history, measurements, weight and condition. Vague regional labels should not be converted into a precise site without evidence.
