Jankov Moldavite Locality

Jankov is an established South Bohemian moldavite locality whose material illustrates the influence of transport and weathering on natural impact glass. The locality name is useful only when it remains linked to a credible recovery record.

Setting

Its setting falls within the southern Bohemian landscape of fields, woodland and discontinuous sedimentary deposits. Erosion can expose older moldavite-bearing material at the surface or redistribute it into younger ground.

Geological History

Regional moldavites originated in the Ries event about 14.8 million years ago, then entered a much longer history of burial and redeposition. Jankov should therefore be described as a find locality, not as the source crater.

Sedimentary movement may explain rounded margins or subdued sculpture on some pieces, while chemical alteration can produce pits and grooves. The balance differs from specimen to specimen.

Form and Surface

Observed Jankov material can include compact, flattened and irregular forms as well as natural fragments. Morphology should be recorded in plain visual terms and not used as an automatic locality diagnosis.

Surface preservation is best judged by the continuity of weathering across ridges, depressions and older breaks. Bright scars or sharply contrasting chips indicate more recent damage.

Optical Appearance

Under changing light, the same stone may appear dark green, olive or more translucent. Consistent photography and an unedited color reference make comparisons more reliable.

Why Documentation Matters

Because nearby South Bohemian localities can overlap in appearance, provenance cannot be reconstructed confidently from a photograph alone. Weight, measurements, find history and condition belong in one record.

Research and Collecting

For comparative study, Jankov material adds evidence about natural variation within secondary deposits. Collector value should rest on authenticity, preservation and transparent documentation rather than locality marketing.

Field Responsibility

Permission, Czech law and current land-use rules determine whether collecting is allowed. Recording context carefully is as important as recovering the glass.
