Nesměň Moldavite Locality

Nesměň is a classic South Bohemian occurrence within the wider Ločenice–Chlum nad Malší district. Its page now states that regional relationship once and then concentrates on geology, preservation and provenance.

District Context

Together with nearby sites such as Malý Chlum, the locality belongs to a landscape where moldavite-bearing sediments survive as separate remnants. Geographic closeness makes accurate find labels especially important.

Geological Development

Moldavite glass arrived in South Bohemia following the Ries impact approximately 14.8 million years ago. The material later entered sedimentary cycles that could transport, bury and re-expose individual pieces.

Later weathering influenced relief, patina and the appearance of old fractures. Those features record post-impact history and should not be simplified into a single locality “type.”

Specimen Variation

Material attributed to Nesměň includes differently shaped and differently worn stones, from compact pieces to flattened bodies and fragments. Each form needs direct description rather than a generic template.

Appearance in light depends on thickness, internal features and exterior condition. Olive and darker green tones should be recorded with consistent, minimally edited photography.

Provenance and Condition

Provenance is strongest when the find area, chain of custody, weight, dimensions and photographs all refer to one exact stone. Condition notes should separate old weathered breaks from recent chips.

Scientific Use

Within a documented group, Nesměň specimens contribute to the study of transport and preservation across neighboring South Bohemian deposits. Appearance by itself cannot reliably distinguish those nearby sites.

Responsible Recovery

Collecting requires permission and compliance with Czech environmental and property law. Disturbance should be minimized, and any useful context should be recorded at the time of discovery.
