Kuchařovice Moldavite Locality

Kuchařovice is a documented South Moravian occurrence northeast of Znojmo, commonly discussed with neighboring Suchohrdly. The paired name Kuchařovice–Suchohrdly is scientifically useful because the surviving deposit and its material cross a simple commercial locality label.

Geographic and Geological Setting

At the margin between the Bohemian Massif and younger sediments of the Carpathian Foredeep, isolated gravel remnants record older drainage. Erosion has removed much of the former cover and left discontinuous bodies in the landscape.

Moldavite-Bearing Gravels

Reddish, quartz-rich sandy gravels are associated with the occurrence. Geological work treats this as a high-positioned Neogene locality, while also noting that the source of the pebbles and moldavites is not completely resolved.

These uncertainties belong in the account. They are more informative than assigning every layer a precise age or transport route that the evidence cannot support.

Transport and Form

Flat, rounded and pebble-like moldavites with relatively shallow sculpture are characteristic of documented Kuchařovice–Suchohrdly material. Their form is consistent with sedimentary transport after the Ries impact approximately 14.8 million years ago.

Abrasion among gravel clasts can reduce edges and older relief, while later corrosion enlarges pits or fissures. The final surface therefore combines mechanical and chemical history.

Color and Internal Features

Green, olive and brown-green tones occur, with thick specimens appearing darker until backlit. Bubbles, cavities or flow structures may be present in moldavite generally and should be claimed only when visible on the individual stone.

Provenance Standard

Because Kuchařovice and Suchohrdly are often grouped together, the label should preserve the exact level supported by the record. Matching photographs, weight, dimensions and condition make that record verifiable.

Scientific Significance

The locality provides a clear example of strongly reworked Moravian moldavite and has been included in chemical and sedimentological studies. Its importance rests on geological context, not on deep spiky sculpture.

Responsible Collecting

Private land, active workings and protected features require permission and care. Recording the sedimentary context adds more lasting value than removing a stone without documentation.
